Sustainable Interior Design with Sarah Walker | S27E12

One way to think of Covid in a positive mindset is that it certainly has made people more aware of their physical and mental health. On this week’s episode of The Chaise Lounge, Sarah Walker of The Curated House joins Nick May where they talk about sustainable interior design.

Furniture and other décor items are not manufactured with health in mind. They are made with toxins that give us higher chances of being diagnosed with a serious disease. That is where Sarah comes in to save the day!

You need to address your built environment as a radical act of self care as a way of investing in your health and well being. That’s really what it is. It’s either going to positively contribute to living in your optimal state of well being or it’s going to hijack your health with those hidden toxins.

A Conversation with Brand Advisor, Author and DIY PR Expert, Amy Flurry | S27E11

Our next guest advises us to consider how many projects are submitted to a magazine or other piece of publishing before submitting projects for press. On this week’s episode of The Chaise Lounge, Nick May is joined by Amy Flurry.

Amy runs a communications company that specializes in the interior design industry. Her book Recipe for Press was written to help you pitch to editors and be your own publicist. Services she provides include consulting and temporary media outreach. In this episode, she gives advice on how to get press for your interior design business.

This year has been so crazy and thrown so many curveballs, but I think we’ve all learned a lot about our businesses and about the strength and importance of relationships and being nimble.

From Delray Beach, Florida, Jackie went to school at the University of Florida. She started her business by winning a contest which entitled her to be on the front page of the local newspaper. NIck and Jackie discuss how things have changed in business, marketing, and being open-minded and flexible to get a design project completed. New construction really allows you to be a lot more creative. And of course depending on who the architect is, but we have so much more flexibility in terms of checking the footprint of the house. We get heavily involved.

Everybody wants solution based furniture which means it has built-in convenience options, it has USB plugs, even power plugs, speakers. Just anything that would make that piece all inclusive to anything that you want to do.

Coast to Coast Design Co-Host Lisa Davenport | S27E8

Many memories are made with our grandparents that we carry into adulthood. They teach us important lessons and make us laugh. Joining Nick May on The Chaise Lounge this week is Lisa Davenport of LDD Interiors.

Lisa co-hosts the Coast to Coast Design podcast with fellow friend and designer Garrison Hullinger. Nick’s friendship with both Lisa and Garrison came from the power of podcasting and being in the interior design world.

LDD Interiors incorporates the client’s personality and history into their designs. With offices in Connecticut and Naples, Florida, Lisa is helping Nick’s own parents move down to Florida and design their new space. Now that’s a strong friendship!

If we can’t laugh at some of our mistakes, we should learn from our mistakes. But if we can’t laugh at some of them, get out of the business. Get out. Life is too short not to laugh at some of this stuff.

What we always learned is if you have goals, keep them abstract. Don’t figure out the roadmap to get to the goal, but keep your eye on the goal. You’ll find it.
