S21 E11 – Lauren Svenstrup Says Residential Isn’t Only About Feelings

Welcome back to the Chaise Lounge. Today, Lauren Svenstrup of Studio Sven is in the Lounge. Svenstrup tells Nick all about her circuitous route from studying furniture design in Michigan’s upper peninsula to discovering interior design and running her own company.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Like so many people, Lauren Svenstrup didn’t know what career she was shooting for when she was choosing her college. She grew up in Indiana and always had a flair for designing and making, but she didn’t want to stay in Indiana, and she wasn’t sure which direction she wanted to take her passion for design. So she looked for schools where she could snowboard while she figured it out. She landed in a furniture design program at Northern Michigan University with a heavy concentration on woodworking. That didn’t satisfy her design itch, so she switched to an environmental design program, which shortly after was dissolved and replaced with a program called human-centered design. The new program focused on how people interact with the spaces and objects around them. She spent two summers learning about the world of interior design while interning in Texas with her now-aunt at a multifamily housing residential design firm where she ended up working after graduation.

I don't take the easy path to something. I have to explore every single option before I get there at sometimes the obvious end result.
